In the last few months, my view of technology has changed significantly. The past has been filled with data center strategy discussions and complex cloud conversations.  We all know this is where the world is taking us from the IT Transformation strategy…but, what is your DIGITAL Transformation strategy?  

Minneapolis, MN – October 23^rd, 2017 - As part of their commitment to Dell EMC, Cyber Advisors announced this week that they have chosen software defined Dell EMC VxRail and VMware as the Hyperconverged (HCI) solution of choice to host their own internal operations.

Would you have guessed that unstructured data is growing at a rate much higher than structured data?  By 2020, IDC estimates that 80% of a typical businesses data will be unstructured.  

Looking into 2017, I am heading into the year championing the latest technology trends.  Avoiding the hype is always a challenge in our industry, as there are a lot of great technology ideas out there, but few of them are actually executed on properly.  My crystal ball tells me that the below trends are going to be top of mind in 2017.

Today, let's pretend I am an IT Manager at one of my clients.  As an IT manager at XYZ Company, I am responsible for making sure day to day datacenter operations are on par.  If it goes down, I am ultimately responsible. My job is risky, as my recommendations on technology solutions and partners I work with are approved by the CIO or someone above me, but ultimately will fall back on me if I make a bad choice.  Many of these decisions are really mine to make, as long as the senior management approves and there is budget to do so.  I have a great trust relationship with senior management, as I have made very wise recommendations to my executive team.

The datacenter transition is AGAIN among us.  Years ago, it was moving from big iron (datacenter V1) to commodity X86 servers to standardize and give people the freedom of operating system choice.  Soon after, server virtualization took the world by storm.  To match the compute virtualization craze, storage virtualization and automated tiering simplified our storage lives.  In our industry, we really look at the migration from a physical to virtualized datacenter as datacenter V2.  

Cloud conversations can go many different ways.  It is, after all, a fairly wide open and eclectic topic.  As part of my blog this week, I will explain how I approach PUBLIC IAAS cloud from a consultative approach.  

Although not necessarily a bleeding edge topic (maybe slightly more cutting edge), Hyperconvergence is definitely taking huge steps in the right direction.  Businesses in all vertical markets seem to be adopting or at least taking some interest in Hyperconverged infrastructure.

Traditional security devices are notorious for creating an avalanche of alerts that overwhelm an IT department that does not have security trained professionals.  Even if those professionals are on staff, time is always at a premium.
